Teenage Pregnancy Declines in Akatsi North

Research and Advisory Contributions from SCCB-Africa’s Dr Mohammed Ibrahim and Collaborators Help Drive Change
Teenage pregnancy rates in Ghana’s Akatsi North District have fallen – from 12.49% in 2021 to 7.79% in 2024 – thanks to the combined efforts of local leaders, government agencies, NGOs, and researchers. SCCB-Africa’s Dr Mohammed Ibrahim contributed as a consultant/research collaborator, as part of a UK and Ghana research team working with Good Neighbours Ghana.
Findings from the baseline study, published in the influential peer-reviewed journal Children & Society – Teenage Pregnancy and Adolescents’ Attitudes Toward Marriage and Pregnancy – informed community interventions such as girls’ clubs, life-skills training, and livelihood support. A follow-up study, funded by the International Science Partnerships Fund (ISPF), will be released soon.
At SCCB-Africa, we remain committed to advancing child development – because getting it right early improves quality of life across the life course.
